As we turn our calendars to June and (finally) face a reprieve from finicky spring weather, women everywhere are faced with the annual conundrum of what to wear when the temperatures climb. With our trusty trousers and go-to denim taking a seasonal backseat, the search for an alternative option to wear on bottom has never felt more urgent. Fortunately, without fail, there’s one style that makes its grand return year after year: linen pants.

No matter what your summer agenda looks like—making the most of your vacation days, holding it down in your office—linen pants undoubtedly deserve a spot in your warm-weather lineup. Equal parts lightweight and stylish, these breezy bottoms are the unsung heroes of our summer wardrobes. Today’s linen pants options are more plentiful than ever, ranging from effortless pull-on styles to sharply tailored designs that make getting dressed a breeze (literally).

Looking for the perfect linen pants? We’ve done the heavy lifting (read: hours of scrolling while I caught up on Summer House) to bring you the best linen pants to pack and style all season long.

How to Style Linen Pants

When it comes to styling linen pants, think of them as a blank slate—anything goes. For a laid-back look, opt for other lightweight essentials like fitted tanks, relaxed tees, and airy blouses that will allow the linen pants to take center stage. Want to dress them up? Try a strapless top and a playful heel, complete with seasonal accessories like a straw clutch or a silk scarf for the perfect sun-kissed look.

Planning a summer getaway? Consider outfit combinations that can easily transition from day to night, like a strapless top and linen trousers. The fitted top and relaxed bottoms strike a balance that creates an ideal base for a bit of light layering (think: an open button-up, a cashmere cardigan, or a classic denim jacket).

With cool shades and a breezy button-up

Source: @alexadagmar

Linen pants are casual in nature, but on the days that you’re hoping to sport a bit more than a ribbed tank, try layering with a button-up. The two evoke a carefree, vacation-ready attitude that works just as well for a day at home or an afternoon at sea. (Physically, I’m the first; Mentally, I’m the latter.). This look wouldn’t be complete without a pair of trendy shades, and this season, we’re partial to red pairs.

Summer weather can be unpredictable at best, especially if you’re headed on a trip. Whether you’re up early to beat the crowds or winding down with a post-dinner stroll, pairing your linen pants with a chunky crewneck is a stylish solution to fickle temperatures. Equal parts cozy and cool, this no-fuss combo can be styled with sandals or clogs for an understated, polished look.

No time (or room in your suitcase) to spare? Opt for a monochromatic look. While head-to-toe black is a classic go-to, don’t shy away from mixing different shades of the same color. Your blues don’t have to match entirely; a tonal look feels just as intentional as a monochrome one. Plus, sticking to one color makes it easier to add a pop of color, whether through a fun shoe, a statement bag, or a bold accessory.

Unfortunately, I have a recurring problem where all of my beauty products run out at the same time. My bathroom waste basket, full of empties, is the pesky flag that waves for a restock at Sephora—but in this economy, that can cause half a paycheck. Until things start looking back up, I’ve made it a mission to find affordable alternatives for my high-end beauty products.

Make no mistake, not a morning goes by without a quick swipe of my Valentino blush, but if there’s one thing that I’ve learned throughout the years, it’s that there are loads of money-saving products that rival some of the more expensive ones. The downside to that? Finding budget-friendly products that perform as well as luxury ones is like finding a needle in a haystack. Luckily, I’ve been doing years of research, and I’ve found what I believe to be the best of the best. These are are my 15 can’t-live-without beauty products under $20.

1. Eucerin Immersive Hydration Daily Face Lotion ($17)

A few months ago, I held up what I thought was the most elite moisturizer on the market, only for my dermatologist to advise against it and suggest swapping it for Eucerin’s daily moisturizer instead. I promptly tracked down the nearest CVS and located said product before proceeding to walk the entirety of the length home in utter disbelief that this $16 bottle of moisturizer was somehow going to perform better than the $78 jar in my medicine cabinet. Well, you know what they say: Trust the professionals. Thanks to my doctor, I’ll likely never pay more than $20 for a moisturizer again.

2. The Ordinary 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil ($11)

The other day, I was out shopping when I popped into The Ordinary to restock my long-time rose hip seed oil. I use it primarily for my morning Gua Sha routine (which I still swear by), and occasionally for nighttime use if I’m experiencing a dry spell. When I got home later that day, my husband mentioned that “someone” had charged $11.97 to our card. He knew I was stopping for a few beauty refills, but being the notoriously big spender that I am, he believed the charge seemed a bit too low to be one of my own accord. That’s when I explained that it was indeed me, restocking on a face product, to which he replied with “You got a serum for under $15?” Yes, yes, I did. And it really works, too.

3. e.l.f. Power Grip Primer ($10)

I’ve been using e.l.f. ‘s Power Grip Primer for years. Many moons ago, I experimented with other primers at higher price points, but felt like the difference in quality didn’t warrant the difference in cost. Coming in at under $10, its grippy, gel-like constituency keeps my makeup in place all day, while its hyaluronic acid composition plumps and smooths my skin’s appearance.

4. NYX Matte Makeup Setting Spray ($10)

A former enthusiast of Urban Decay’s cult-favorite All Nighter Waterproof Setting Spray, I went out on a limb and tried NYX’s Matte Makeup Setting Spray after realizing that I had accidentally arrived in sunny Orlando, Florida, without my setting spray and nary a Sephora in sight. Almost $30 cheaper, I thought to myself, “No way is this going to work.” Boy, was I surprised when my makeup was still perfectly intact after the ultimate test of makeup survival: a long day at Disney.

5. Vaseline Body Balm Stick ($7)

Growing up in the ’90s, a jar of Vaseline was somewhat of a permanent fixture under the bathroom sink. As I got older, for some reason, I had completely written off petrolium jelly until I discovered the brand’s healing formula in stick form. Enter: Vaseline’s Body Balm Stick. Although it’s an all-over body balm, I’ve been using it for years as an overnight lip mask alternative before bed. If you want a bronzed, shimmery glow, check out Vaseline Cocoa Shimmer Body Balm Stick—one swipe over your collarbone and it’ll look like you spent a day at the beach.

6. The INKEY List Caffeine Eye Cream ($11)

If there’s one thing I’m protective of, it’s my undereyes. They’ve been an insecurity of mine for as long as I can remember. Naturally, I’ve tried every concealer, serum, and color corrector on the market, so if there’s one thing I’m qualified to advise on, it’s undoubtedly this. After spending more than $100 on an over-hyped, under-performing eye serum, I became so irritable over the matter that on a whim, I picked up The INKEY List’s cult-favorite Caffeine Eye Cream. For just over $10, it’s a quality daytime undereye serum that helps to reduce dark circles and blur fine lines.

7. Tanologist Hydrating Gradual Tan Lotion ($16)

I’m not one to use traditional self-tanners for the sheer fact that I can’t stand the idea of waking up to orange-tinted sheets; however, I started using Jergens Natural Glow Self Tanning Lotion back in high school and haven’t been able to wean myself off tanning lotions since. Unlike a classic bronzing mousse, a tanning lotion is intended for everyday use and is infused with natural properties for a buildable, natural sun-kissed glow. I’ve since transitioned to Tanologist’s Hydrating Gradual Tan Lotion, and find that it mirrors the formula of similar formulas with much higher price tags.

8. Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara ($10)

I’ll never be a proponent of expensive mascara. Be it growing up with Maybelline’s Great Lash Volumizing and Lengthening Mascara (the “pink and green” mascara, if you will) or the idea that a great mascara is dependent on the health of your lashes, I’ve yet to try a $30 mascara that inspires me to hit the repurchase button. Maybelline’s Sky High Mascara is the perfect balance of lengthening and volumizing—proof that you don’t need to spend more $10 to have great lashes.

9. Nexxus Flexible Hold Hairspray ($15)

If there’s one thing I’m good at, it’s spending money, but one thing you won’t catch me spending money on? Hairspray. Instead, I’ve been known to rock the Nexxus Flexible Hold Hairspray for the last few years. The hold is as good as any $30 bottle, but comes in at under $15.

10. Kristin Ess Hair Instant Lift Thickening Spray ($15)

My issues with struggling to pay top-dollar for my haircare routine don’t just stop at hairspray–rarely do I spend money on high-end styling products, especially when you can buy one that’s this good for just $20. I’ve been a fan of the Kristin Ess Hair Instant Lift Thickening Spray, and the rest of her collection, since the 2017 Target launch. For someone with fine hair in need of all of the lifting and volumizing help I can get, I stay restocking this product—but not often, since it seems to last me for months at a time.

11. Maybelline Hyper Easy Liquid Pen Eyeliner ($10)

Back in college, I felt pretty rock-and-roll for applying my cat eye with Kat Von D’s Tattoo Liquid Eyeliner before class (yep, I was the girl showing up to an 8 a.m. in a full face of makeup). But as I entered adulthood and started to wear less and less makeup, I slowly forgot about wearing eyeliner entirely. After letting my infamous KVD liner dry up, I decided to pick up an inexpensive replacement at the drug store, and to my surprise, found a new liner that was right on par with Kat’s.

12. e.l.f. Halo Glow Setting Powder ($7)

As much as I want to spend $47 on Laura Mercier’s Translucent Loose Setting Powder, I fear that I can’t find it within me to fork over my hard-earned dollars on it when e.l.f.’s $7 version works just as well for me. It has a light, silky texture that sets my makeup in place for an all-day photo finish that’s never cakey.

13. Tree Hut Tropic Glow Shea Sugar Tropical Body Scrub ($12)

I’d be hard-pressed to turn in my Dove Beauty Bar for an expensive body wash, and even less likely to swap my Tree Hut Body Scrub for a jar of anything more expensive. In this economy? Although Tree Hut’s version has been around forever, I still stock my shower with it regularly, and find that it does exactly what it’s intended to.

14. CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream Moisturizer ($17)

Again, my Dermatologist did me a solid and let me know that it was recommended to swap my expensive night cream with CeraVe’s Skin Renewing Night Moisturizer. The results of this cream prove to be incredible effective, thanks to its triple ceramide formula that helps to hydrate, reduce the look of fines, and restore my skin’s barrier, all for less than half the cost of my old tried-and-true.

15. Sephora Collection Retractable Rouge Gel Lip Liner ($13)

Don’t get me wrong–I’m a sucker for Charlotte Tilbury’s Pillow Talk Lip Cheat Lip Liner–but I run through it so quickly that spending $25 every month or so was starting to add up. Though I’m not ready to give up on my tried-and-true liner entirely, I find that Sephora’s line of Rouge Gel Lip Liners work as a solid alternative. In my opinion, the formula is a bit smoother, making application a bit easier—not to mention, the pencil is retractable so there’s no need for a sharpener.

Although the weather in Chicago might have been slow to catch up, summer is officially here. With the cold, snowy days long since behind us, it’s only right that we make the most of the gloriously warm weather while we’ve got it. That means it’s time to dust off those creative skills and try out some new summer hobbies.

If there’s one thing that I’ve learned about adulthood, it’s that finding a hobby is more difficult than it initially seems. It can take a bit of trial and error to find what exactly lights your fire, but once you do, life just gets so much better. Whether you’re in it to fill a void, get away from your tech screens, work your creative muscles, or simply try something new, we’ve got you covered. These 30 summer hobbies are here to help you have your most fulfilling season yet:

1. Start a junk journal

While you’re out and about this summer, you’ll likely collect plenty of restaurant receipts, ticket stubs, coffee sleeves, business cards, and maybe even some travel postcards. Why not repurpose all this “junk” in a book of memories you’ll love looking back on? Junk journaling is all about using everyday items and extra scraps that would otherwise be considered junk into a fun scrapbook of sorts. All you need to get started is a blank journal, some double-sided tape or glue, and whatever scraps you have lying around.

2. Press flowers into art

Summer is the peak season for all sorts of flowers, and pressing them allows you to enjoy the beautiful blooms long after summer has ended. Whether you want to preserve flowers from a bouquet you received, blooms from your own garden, or wildflowers you picked alongside the road, pressing them is as simple as placing them between layers of parchment paper under a heavy book. In 2-4 weeks, you’ll have beautifully preserved flowers you can frame as art.

3. Try watercolor painting

Watercolor painting is the perfect artsy activity to do outdoors this summer. Because all you need is a small paint set, some brushes, and a cup of water, it’s easy to take your supplies to a park or out onto your patio or balcony. Set up with a chair or on a blanket and enjoy the warm weather and sunshine while you paint.

4. Perfect your at-home coffee recipe

One of my favorite parts of summer is that I can finally enjoy my iced coffee without my hands freezing while I hold it. There’s just nothing like that first sip of a delicious iced coffee on a sunny summer day. And if you’re anything like me, you might be guilty of a daily Starbucks stop to get your caffeine fix because it just doesn’t taste the same when you make it at home. Instead of spending $7 on coffee every day, use this summer to finally perfect your at-home coffee recipe. Your wallet will thank you.

5. Practice meditation

Taking a moment for yourself is never a bad idea, but it’s always easier said than done. Forcing yourself to clear your mind seems like an easy task, but our busy lives always find a way to seep into our thoughts. This summer, make meditation a part of your everyday routine and get one step closer to reaching your ultimate zen.

6. Try rock climbing

Girlies with a fear of heights: This hobby may not be for you. But if you feel comfortable without your feet planted firmly on the ground, it could be your new summer obsession. Start by visiting a rock climbing gym near you to learn the basics. Once you’ve mastered climbing indoors, you can even take your skills to the great outdoors. It’s the ideal hobby if you want to challenge yourself this summer, and, as an added bonus, your arms will get a killer workout.

7. Take a dip

Whether you have access to a pool or live by a beach or lake, relaxing near a body of water is a summer requirement. This year, turn your passive enjoyment of floating on the water into a full-on hobby by taking up swimming. If backstroke isn’t your thing, you can also try your hand at paddleboarding, kayaking, or watersports like water polo or volleyball.

8. Cook your way through a cookbook

Level up your usual dinner rotation by choosing a cookbook to work your way through this season. Not only will you improve your cooking skills, but you will also have some new fancy recipes you can enjoy yourself or impress your friends with at your next gathering. Throw on The Bear for some chef inspiration and get cooking.

9. Discover all the outdoor patios in your town

If you asked me to picture a quintessential summer evening, my mind would immediately conjure visions of me wearing an adorable sundress and sipping a spritz on an outdoor patio. It’s the perfect way to soak up the sun while enjoying a good drink and some tasty bites. Make it your mission this summer to discover all the best outdoor patios your town has to offer. You can recruit friends to try this with you and create a final ranking when summer comes to a close.

10. Learn to do your nails at home

A fresh manicure is one of the quickest ways to boost confidence. Something about a cute color on my nails just makes me feel like I have my entire life together, even when that couldn’t be further from the truth. This summer, learn to do your nails at home so that new-nails feeling is accessible whenever needed. It might take a few tries before your nails look salon-ready, but come fall, you might just break up with your nail tech.

11. Pick up an instrument

For years, I have secretly harbored dreams of strumming a country song at a summer bonfire while my friends sing along. In order for this dream to come true, I would first have to learn how to play a single chord on the guitar. Whether you want to learn how to play the ukelele, piano, or guitar like me, make this summer the year you finally start your music career.

12. Try your hand at flower arranging

Trust us, there’s more to it than taking off the packaging and plopping your blooms in a vase. Flower arranging is an art form in itself and one of the best summer hobbies to pick up as the weather warms up. After all, nothing screams summer like an arrangement of fresh flowers on the table. To hone your flower design skills, grocery store blooms will work just fine, or you could really go all in and try growing your own. Experiment with different types of flowers and vessels to create something unique and beautiful you’ll be proud to show off.

13. Make a scrapbook

By the end of the summer, your camera roll is going to be full of pictures anyway, so why not document those memories with something a little more special? Print out those photos and preserve your favorite summertime moments with a scrapbook. To make this summer hobby even more fun, throw it all the way back to childhood and stock up on colorfully patterned paper, stickers, washi tape, and other embellishments. If you work on it throughout the summer, you’ll have a full album of your favorite memories by the season’s end.

14. Practice sketching

You don’t have to be an artist to make something beautiful. Sketching is a low-pressure form of art that anyone can pick up as a summer hobby. To get started, gather a blanket and some art supplies, and plop down in front of a good view. It could be a view of your city’s skyline, a fountain in a park, a tree in your backyard—whatever strikes your fancy! Then take your time sketching out what you see onto the paper in front of you. This is a great way to spend some time outdoors and really appreciate the world around you.

15. Get into fabric-dyeing

Tie-dyeing was THE summer hobby when we were kids, and we think it’s high time to bring it back. Working with dye can get a little messy, which makes this the perfect hobby to do outside. For an adult take on this favorite childhood activity, try shibori, a Japanese dyeing technique that involves indigo dye. Once you get the hang of it, the sky’s the limit with what you can customize with new patterns of color—think clothing, beach towels, tote bags, bedding, and so much more.

16. Take your workout outdoors

Whether you’re into yoga, running, strength training, or something else, there’s just something about being outside that makes working out more fun. Take advantage of the warm weather by moving your usual workout to your backyard, a local park, or even the beach if you live nearby. You’ll get your daily dose of vitamin D in addition to all those great mental and physical benefits of moving your body.

17. Dabble in mixology

Why pay for overpriced cocktails when you can learn to whip up your favorite drink at home? With the price of nights out ever increasing, this summer is the time to make it happen. Find recipes for your favorite cocktails online, or check out a cocktail recipe book for inspiration. Then gather your ingredients, set out your cocktail-making accessories, and toast to trying new things.

Summer is the perfect time to pick up photography and learn how to use your camera beyond “auto” mode. You’ll be able to flex your skills while documenting your favorite summer sights or snapping the perfect golden hour pics of your besties. Whether you have a DSLR or just your phone camera, learning the basics of photography can make any picture exponentially better. 19. Develop your green thumb

Maybe you’re already a plant mom, or maybe you’re like me and can’t get within 10 feet of a plant without it passing away. Regardless of your previous skill level, gardening can be a rewarding hobby to take up in the summertime. Starting a garden can be an intimidating task, but thankfully, there are plenty of resources out there to help you get your green thumb on. Whether you prefer to read about how to plan, sow, plant, and maintain your garden or watch a YouTube series on how to get started, there are plenty of ways to learn and get growing.

20. Make your own jewelry

Arts and crafts have always been some of the most popular summer hobbies, but have you tried making your own jewelry yet? Capture your own design aesthetic in wearable pieces that you can make from the comfort of your own home. Make them for yourself, gift them to a friend, sell them on Etsy—the possibilities are endless. There are some awesome kits, books, and YouTube videos (essential techniques, supplies to purchase, and, of course, hacks) that will make getting started a whole lot easier.

21. Take a hike

Grab your hiking boots, ladies, because we’re trailblazing this summer. If you’ve been hiking before, you know that it’s one of the best ways to reconnect with yourself and the world around you. 22. Repurpose old fabrics

Grab your scissors and your sewing kit (or a sewing machine if you’re fancy) and prepare to transform old clothing or fabrics into something fresh, trendy, and wearable. If you’re not into sewing (yet), start with some no-sew upcycle clothing projects. When you’re ready to move on to more advanced techniques, work your sewing magic to completely transform an item you’d otherwise get rid of. Whether you want to flip thrifted pieces, try out a new trend, or personalize your wardrobe, upcycling old clothes is a fun way to enter a creative flow, express yourself, and be a bit kinder to the environment.

23. Explore new places in your town

It’s never too late to appreciate the nooks and crannies of your own hometown. Between shopping small businesses, visiting farmers markets, and hitting up festivals, there’s plenty to do come summer that will help you rediscover the beauty of your own city. Challenge yourself to visit one to two new places a week to broaden your horizons and appreciate all that your city has to offer.

24. Read in the sunshine

Name a better feeling than diving into with a good book while basking in the sunlight. We’ll wait. The slow moments of summer serve as the perfect opportunity to finally tackle that ever-growing “to-read list.” And whether you’re looking for books that keep you on the edge of your seat, let you escape reality for a while, or inspire you to be better, we’ve got some page-turning recommendations for you.

25. Hit the tennis court

Channel your inner Serena Williams because tennis is a phenomenal way to get outside, get your heart rate up, and get your sweat on. Do I personally know one thing about tennis other than the mandatory grunt that comes with serving? No. But do I enjoy the satisfying “plunk” that occasionally occurs when a tennis ball bounces perfectly off of the center of my racket? You bet. If you want to get official, you can hit up some YouTube tutorials like this one so that you can get a match going with a friend.

26. Practice journaling

Journaling is a great way to get in touch with your inner self, explore new ideas, and express what is weighing on your heart. Whether you view journaling as a way to record a stream of thoughts or as an outlet to discover your purpose, getting started can be a therapeutic addition to your “me time.” Plus, you can take it just about anywhere (early sunny morning on the Chicago lakefront, anyone?).

27. Learn to golf

Golf may seem a little intimidating if you’ve never hit the links before, but it’s a fun summer hobby that you can stick with for (pretty much) ever. There are so many components to golf that you can spend time mastering (putting, chipping, driving, driving the golf cart while looking cute in golf attire, etc.). While investing in a set of clubs can be a bit expensive, a good set can last you a lifetime.

28. Go on bike rides

Zipping around on a bike with the wind in your hair and the sun on your face is an unmatched feeling. It takes me straight back to summer nights in my hometown as a kid and leaves me nostalgic AF. This summer, recapture some of that carefree childhood feeling by hopping on a bike and exploring. If you don’t already own one, many cities offer affordable bike rentals you can hop on for the afternoon. Just be sure to wear your helmet!

29. Update old furniture (or start from scratch)

There’s a big learning curve when it comes to tackling anything handy—especially if you’re like me—but after watching stunning home improvement projects on TikTok for a few hours, I suddenly feel like I am Joanna Gaines herself and start looking at my old furniture thinking, “oh, I for sure can sand and stain that!” Entering the world of home improvement is no joke, but the payoff is great. Not only will you feel a sense of “holy shit, I did that” accomplishment, but it can also result in some really great pieces that save you a ton of money in the long run.

30. Foster an animal

If you’ve fostered an animal before, you know that fostering is one of the most rewarding and mutually beneficial relationships in the game. Not only can it result in cuddles, kisses, and overall cuteness overload, but it’ll also help prepare the animal for future adoption and free up room in the shelter, allowing the shelter to take new animals in. It’s a great way to experience puppy or kitty love without long-term commitment and help out a furry friend in need (and your community). Reach out to shelters in your area to find fostering opportunities near you and thank me later!

Imagine this: It’s 10 a.m. on a Saturday morning and you just rolled out of bed. You check the temperature (it’s a high of 75) and crack the windows open while you apply a bit of makeup before you walk to meet your friends at your favorite coffee shop. You throw on your favorite summer dress, and instead of overthinking your footwear choice, slip into your new pair of sandals. They’re easy to walk in (no blisters around these parts), and are a complete upgrade from the pair you wore to death last year. The bad news? Sandal weather isn’t quite here yet. The good news? Summer 2025’s sandal trends are—and they’re guaranteed to fill the boot-shaped hole that appeared in your closet when winter left.

Summer dressing is all about ease. When the temperature is up and calendars are filled, fussing with complicated or uncomfortable pieces is a no-go. From the resurgence of ’90s-era flip-flops to embellished, strappy styles, this year’s sandal trends perfectly reflect that desire for effortlessness. They’re ready to be slipped on on the daily, but also feel like an innovative step up from what was dominating our closets in years past.

Whether you’re looking for a pair of sandals to accompany you on your summer beach days or a pair that can be your go-to for patio date nights, these are the sandals you can expect to see everywhere in 2025.

1. Embellishments

Source: Alohas, Tory Burch, and Jeffrey Campbell

Summer 2025’s sandals are proving the wheel doesn’t need to be completely reinvented in order for a piece to feel exciting and fresh. Embellishments like sculptural rings and shell details are working overtime to breath new life into strappy sandals, slides, and flip flops. Their styling options remain endless—after all, sandals are meant to be uncomplicated—but the subtle touches are enough to give a signal that your go-to sandals got a modern update.

2. Flip-Flops

In what feels like an ode to the ’90s and early aughts, thong sandals are back with a vengeance. While classic, Y-shaped designs have risen back to popularity, the $5 Old Navy pairs you used to live in have nothing on the luxe variations the silhouette is available in for summer 2025.

On spring/summer 2025 runways, brands like Alaïa and Chloé proved that flip-flop’s minimalist design is worthy of being worn with more than just your most casual outfits. Supple leathers, eye-catching embellishments, and the addition of heels are giving thong sandals a fresh new look that’s making them ready for anything.

4. Wedges

If you thought you’d seen the last of wedges in your sandal rotation, think again—the ’70s style is riding on the coattails of the boho resurgence to make a modern comeback. Nostalgic, wooden heels were seen at Chloé—who could forget the viral, front-row wedge moment during their fall 2024 presentation—serving as the perfect companion for the billowing blouses and dreamy, lace dresses that are in play for laid-back summer style. If boho isn’t quite your speed, a sculptural wedge in a soft leather is a versatile option for upcoming al fresco dinners and summer parties.

The post Review: ‘Atmosphere’ May Be Taylor Jenkins Reid’s Most Heartbreaking Book Yet appeared first on The Everygirl.

Some kids grew up fascinated with outer space. They had glow-in-the-dark constellations plastered onto their bedroom ceilings (and knowing how well those stuck, they’re probably still cemented there today), owned every Buzz Lightyear toy, and dressed up as astronauts for multiple Halloweens. Personally, I was completely terrified by space. The thought of infinite darkness, where our lives were so tiny it was almost like they didn’t exist at all, literally kept me up at night (and sometimes still does). So, when one of my favorite authors, Taylor Jenkins Reid, announced her newest book—following the first woman scientist joining NASA’s Space Shuttle Program—I was honestly a little skeptical.

Instead of her past settings of glamorous 1950s Old Hollywood, the LA music scene of the ’60s, or the elite tennis world of the ’90s, I was being forced to dive into a book all about a place I try to think about as little as possible because I find it so unsettling. However, putting my trust in TJR, I picked up a copy of Atmosphere, and thank god I did.

If you’re a Taylor Jenkins Reid fan, you know that her books will draw you in and spit you out (in the best way possible). You enter completely immersive worlds, and when you’ve fallen in love with them, an unexpected twist leaves you heartbroken. I don’t often cry while reading, but I did with The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones & The Six. So, I thought I knew what I was getting into with Atmosphere. Little did I know it was her most devastating book yet—and I loved every second. Read on for my full review:

Atmosphere
Taylor Jenkins Reid
Atmosphere

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones & The Six comes an epic new novel set against the backdrop of the 1980s space shuttle program about the extraordinary lengths we go to live and love beyond our limits.

Shop now

What is Atmosphere about?

Atmosphere follows Joan Goodwin, who has always been fascinated with the stars. She was perfectly content with her job studying them as a professor of physics and astronomy at Rice University. With her job and her niece Frances nearby, she didn’t need anything else. But when she hears that NASA was opening up applications for the first female scientist in its Space Shuttle Program, she knew she had to be one of the women traveling into space. In the summer of 1980, she’s accepted into the program and starts training alongside her fellow candidates, who quickly turn from friends into family. However, Joan’s relationship with one astronaut makes her question everything she thought she knew about herself and the universe at large. Then, in December of 1984, one mission upends everything.

My review of Atmosphere

I rarely give out five-star ratings, and for me to consider something five stars, it’s not enough for it to be a book I love. For a book to be five stars has to make me feel so deeply that long after I turn the last page, I’m still thinking about the story. I’m talking about it in everyday life, trying to convince everyone to read it, and watching fan reviews nonstop. Put simply, it lives rent-free in my mind. That doesn’t always mean the book gives me happy, butterfly feelings (though Atmosphere definitely delivered those at times). Sometimes, I’m left with a pit in my stomach, but the book goes so far beyond entertainment and reminds me how influential words on a page can be—Atmosphere was that kind of five-star read.

You can’t go into the book expecting it to be a space novel like Project Hail Mary or The Martian. It’s not a dramatic space epic, nor is it filled with the juicy gossip of Daisy Jones & The Six. It’s a fascinating character study, just as much about interpersonal relationships as it is about NASA. Taylor Jenkins Reid has always been skilled at writing developed, strong female characters, and in Atmosphere, her talent reaches new heights.

While I may have a paralyzing fear of space, the writing put me so intimately in Joan’s head that I felt like her passion for astronomy was my own. TJR pulls you into Joan’s perspective so well that no decision or choice ever feels out of character. A lot of times as a reader, I’m mentally screaming at a character to realize the obvious—that someone’s in love with them, that someone’s the killer, whatever it is they’re conveniently ignoring the whole book while we clock it on page one. In Atmosphere, I was right beside Joan every step of the way. Sure, we have more information than she does, but I was so locked into her experience that I often forgot the bigger picture.

Joan wasn’t the only carefully crafted character. Every person who graced the pages had so much detail that their motivations and actions always felt true to who they were. This character development is also what made the love story so incredible. Without spoiling too much, let’s just say it wrecked me in the best way possible, and I would read a ten-part series just following their most mundane days.

“For a book to be five stars has to make me feel so deeply that long after I turn the last page, I’m still thinking about the story…Atmosphere was that kind of five-star read.”

The themes in this book also made it so much more impactful than just a story about a crew at NASA. It’s about finding yourself and how society may try to tell you who you are or force you to be someone more palatable. TJR reminds us that the courage it takes to ignore societal pressure is just as brave as literally risking your life to go to space. Especially in a world that forces LGBTQ+ relationships to hide in order to preserve their careers, and women have to prove themselves again and again just to get the opportunities men are handed—themes that still ring true, even 40 years after the book is set.

Taylor Jenkins Reid handles these themes with such delicacy and shows that nothing is too mundane to be meaningful. Life isn’t all about career milestones and big moments—it’s just as much about learning someone’s coffee order and watching TV together while eating takeout. Atmosphere reminds us that achievements aren’t worth celebrating if you don’t have people to celebrate with you and that family is so much more than just who you’re related to. Only Taylor Jenkins Reid could make orbiting the Earth as one of the first women in space and a first kiss between lovers feel equally thrilling.

While the book goes far beyond the space program, I do think it served as the perfect backdrop for this story. The way TJR manages to make something as vast as space feel so accessible and even relatable is unbelievable. While I’m perfectly comfortable with my feet planted firmly on the ground, I could identify with Joan’s willingness to launch herself from Earth in a literal rocket just to try and make sense of our world.

Should you read Atmosphere?

If you’ve made it this far, I think the answer should be pretty obvious. Atmosphere should be required reading, no matter what your book tastes are. It transports you across decades and launches you into a new, endlessly entertaining world. Atmosphere is the kind of book that reminds you why you love reading in the first place. The story slowly builds, and while it may take a few chapters to get into, push through—because the experience is well worth the wait.

The post 25 Summer Salad Recipes to Make When It’s Too Hot to Cook appeared first on The Everygirl.

]]>

Salads are a prime example of something you feel like you should eat because it’s healthy but never actually want to eat. The exception to that, of course, would be the Caesar salad and its widespread fame (especially when enjoyed with fries and a crisp diet Coke). But overall, salads get a bad rap for being boring, soggy, and not very filling as a standalone meal. However, not only is it unfair for the Caesar salad to hold the reputation of the entire salad community on its back, but it’s also wildly inaccurate. There are so many downright delectable salad recipes people are missing out on by writing off salads entirely.

I’m on a personal mission to find some summer salad recipes that I’ll actually be excited to eat. Seasoned to perfection, adorned with delicious cheeses, and packed with fresh, in-season produce, salads offer so much more than just leafy greens. Below, I’ve rounded up 25 delicious summer salad recipes that are guaranteed to convert you into a salad stan.

1. Grilled Corn & Zucchini Salad with Sun-Dried Tomato Vinaigrette

The post Steve Madden Admitted to Duping High-End Designs—but Don’t Buy a New Pair of His Shoes Just Yet appeared first on The Everygirl.

]]>

Until this week, my only knowledge of Steve Madden was limited to my experience scouring the mall in high school, trying to find a pair of heels my mom and I agreed were appropriate for school dances. We’d peruse the shelves at Nordstrom and, after checking the price, quickly pivot to Steve Madden for a pair of shoes whose price reflected the fact that a 15-year-old would be stumbling like a baby deer in them for one night, then probably not pick them up until the next wedding, school dance, or whatever “glamorous” event was on my teen social calendar. After all, whatever Nordstrom shoes I thought had me looking like Zendaya in her So Kates, Steve Madden usually had an almost identical version for half the price down the hall. Now, Steve Madden is making headlines for the same reason I went to his store back in the day: his cheaper “dupes” of designer shoes.

In an episode of The Cutting Room Floor podcast, host Recho Omondi quizzed Madden on his designs, asking if he could name the original designer he duped. What impressed people most was not just that he knew the original designs but also that he didn’t shy away from the fact that Steve Madden takes inspiration from higher-priced designers. When asked how he would respond to people who call Steve Madden a knockoff brand, he said, “It’s like calling the Beatles a knockoff band because they would take a little bit from Motown and a little bit from Elvis. We design tons of shoes, but there’s been the odd little shoe that I’ve nicked here and there.”

This authenticity, combined with his referring to Steve Madden shoppers as “his girls” and pointing out the absurdity of other brands selling plastic jelly shoes for $700, launched a complete Steve Madden obsession on TikTok. A wave of pro-Steve Madden videos flooded my FYP, with people praising him for offering an attainable way to participate in designer trends and encouraging everyone to run to the Steve Madden website to support the company.

Dupes have been rampant in the past few years, but the reception was lukewarm before this interview. There were debates about the ethics of replicating other designers’ work and a general skepticism about how the quality of dupes compares to the real thing. But with this interview, the internet has taken an explicitly pro-dupe stance. Buying “knockoffs” used to be primarily a private practice. People wanted to hide that they couldn’t, or weren’t willing to, pay for the real deal, so even when asked, they’d usually hide that their items weren’t “real.” Brands also followed this golden rule. Sure, we all knew what product a drugstore brand was trying to recreate, but the brands didn’t publicly acknowledge or embrace their reputation as copycat brands like Madden is now. This shift in dupe discourse is more than a one-off viral moment. The internet’s support of Steve Madden reveals just how much the current economic volatility is impacting our shopping habits and the cultural conversation surrounding shopping.

“The internet’s support of Steve Madden reveals just how much the current economic volatility is impacting our shopping habits and the cultural conversation surrounding shopping.”

It’s no coincidence that with inflation rising and the impacts of tariffs starting to show in increasing prices, everyone online is suddenly shamelessly embracing dupes. A study by McKinsey & Company revealed that consumers are worried about rising prices and, in response, are cutting back discretionary spending across categories. Gen X and Gen Z are specifically cutting back in categories such as apparel, electronics, and, you guessed it, footwear. I can’t lie; I’d die to have the original Miu Miu kitten heels, but if I’m already debating whether an iced latte from my favorite coffee shop is in the budget, it’s safe to say there’s no room for designer clothes in my budget or closet.

We would all love to buy higher-end, higher-quality products that are a better investment in the long run, but it’s simply not justifiable when everyday items are so much more expensive. Even the prices of more affordable “dupe” options are rising. Elf, widely known as one of the most inexpensive makeup brands and for dupes like the Power Grip Primer and Halo Glow Liquid Filter, just announced that their prices will go up by $1 due to inflation and tariffs. Madden also said in the podcast that his shoe prices will increase because of tariffs. The state of our economy is such that even the affordable versions of products are becoming less and less attainable for the everyday person. When consumers do want to buy something, if there’s a nearly exact replica of what’s on their wishlist for half the price, it’s not so much an active choice as it is the only option.

“…if I’m already debating whether an iced latte from my favorite coffee shop is in the budget, it’s safe to say there’s no room for designer clothes in my budget or closet.”

Based on the Steve Madden interview’s virality and overwhelmingly positive response, people clearly want a little validation that times are crazy. Shopping is already overwhelming enough, and it seems everyone is eager to shed the guilt or taboo surrounding buying dupes when they’re the only thing most of us can afford right now. But where does that leave us as consumers? Are we stuck in a constant loop of looking for dupes of dupes of dupes as prices continue to go up? And where do we draw the line?

While plenty of the Steve Madden podcast interview discussion is lighthearted, there’s something to be said about how our consumerist culture is so committed to shopping that they’re racing to spend money to support him off a simple acknowledging that many of his designers are “inspired by” others. No matter how well he comes across in the interview, Steve Madden runs a business whose entire goal is to make money off of you. He likely has a huge PR team behind him, and for all we know, his endearing, honest persona could be a complete show to drive sales (though I hope not because he genuinely seems like a delight). TikTok was so quick to run to the Steve Madden website to impulse purchase shoes that most people probably already have plenty of.

“When consumers do want to buy something, if there’s a nearly exact replica of what’s on their wishlist for half the price, it’s not so much an active choice as it is the only option.”

We’ve all bought a dupe here or there, but it’s unlikely that dupes are the solution to saving your wallet during challenging economic times. You’re better served doing real research and taking stock of your financial position to know where you’re overspending, where you can cut back, and how to ensure that even if prices continue to go up, you know how to weather the storm. In this period of economic volatility, maybe the answer is focusing on saving for essentials or budgeting for specific purchases more intentionally rather than hopping on the seemingly endless dupe rollercoaster.

The post Review: ‘Sirens’ Is the Chaotic Summer Binge We Need After ‘The White Lotus’ appeared first on The Everygirl.

]]>

I try not to let my AMC stub, movie snob persona show too aggressively when raving about my favorite shows, but put me on an island with a star-studded cast, a fun wardrobe, and infinite layers of deep, dark secrets to swim through—I just can’t help myself. When I found myself scrolling through Netflix during a holiday weekend, craving a spicy summer watch, Sirens immediately caught my attention. I mean, it’s hard not to be immediately drawn in with its cast alone: May December‘s Julianne Moore, White Lotus‘s Meghann Fahy, and House of the Dragon‘s Milly Alcock.

Featuring subtle nodes to her similar roles in Netflix’s The Perfect Couple, Meghann Fahy confidently returns to the beachside mayhem as a troubled, protective older sister, Devon, who is concerned by her younger sister’s (Milly Alcock) oddly ‘cult-like’ relationship with her elite boss, Michaela (Julianne Monroe). Determined to intervene and better understand her sister’s choices that got her here, Devon must learn to navigate this suspicious island and its mysterious lures of vanity and luxury.

This five-episode series is full of Greek mythological themes, entertaining relationship drama, and deep-cutting sister traumas that, together, sing a very satisfying call. And you should definitely answer. Without giving away too many spoilers, read on for why Sirens is my favorite show on streaming right now.

My review of Sirens

Meghann Fahy’s performance is a candid portrayal of eldest daughter syndrome

Being the oldest daughter is a challenging and vulnerable role to carry. You often fall into the role of caretaker or fixer for your siblings or your parents, which can evolve into unwanted anxious tendencies and unsteady boundaries in relationships. As Devon’s character puts it, “no one knows you like a sister,” but that can come at the cost of knowing yourself.

“This five-episode series is full of Greek mythological themes, entertaining relationship drama, and deep-cutting sister traumas that, together, sing a very satisfying call.”

As an eldest daughter myself, I will admit it is no easy job. But it is one that Meghann Fahy’s Devon wears with a captivating and humorous charm. She’s simultaneously working at her local falafel restaurant, taking care of her dad with dementia, and now trying to save her little sister, Simone, from a suspicious cult-like leader. Devon is suffering from a severe case of the anxious caregiver. Never mind that she has her own set of conflicts to face as a semi-functioning, recovering alcoholic who is also sleeping with her married boss on the side. No matter how much she’d like to fight it, Devon is defenseless and lost at sea—but that’s what makes her big sister character so relatable and so easy to connect with.

It’s not until Devon comes face-to-face with Michaela herself and experiences her supposed siren song of weaponized vulnerability first-hand that Devon realizes how alone she actually feels. The layers of conflict in Devon’s world would do well in a few therapy sessions, but in the meantime, the viewer acts as a stand-in therapist, watching her entertaining, moving, and sometimes unsettling character arc. Sirens draws you in like a sailor lost at sea, with suspense and cult-like settings, but the show quickly turns you on your head and asks you to consider hard questions like “What do we owe the people who raised us?” and “How much can people really change?”

The Lilly-Pulitzer-style wardrobe is just as fun as the plot

The best shows are not only good for their twisted plot but also their incredible costuming. Full of preppy, easter-egg dresses, vibrant florals, boat shoes, and everything fishermancore, Sirens‘ wardrobe is full of fashion nostalgia. It’s always funny how simply falling in love with a character can make me rethink my entire wardrobe. As a more subtle neutral gal, I never thought a day would come when I would be itching to wear a Lilly Pulitzer dress, but hey, hey, here we are.

“If you are still in recovery from White Lotus season three and looking for some new tropical chaos to embark on, Sirens is the perfect weekend getaway.”

Simone—Sirens‘ preppy assistant with a suspiciously anxious attachment style to her boss—has my favorite symbolic wardrobe of the bunch. Simone’s tight headband, pink mini dress, and delicate accessories are the way she disguises her true self to fit in with this elite world and get as far away as possible from her past. I’m always a sucker for a symbolic wardrobe, and I love the way her outfits follow along with her internal conflicts in the show.

The concept has so many entertaining Greek mythological themes

One of my favorite things to look for when watching a film or series are those subtle additions that speak deeper to the fun concepts at play (here comes that AMC stub snob). It’s like having a story within a story with infinite puzzle pieces that, when put together, can reveal so much more about the characters. This is where the juicy stuff lives, and Sirens is full of them. From its symbolic use of mirrors (in both art and literature, mirrors can be seen as a symbol for a siren’s ties to vanity and the allure of worldly pleasures) to its not-so-subtle title, there is no shortage of complex mythological themes to grace your screen.

One thing I didn’t know fully before watching, but I was so glad I quickly googled, was the sirens’ relevance to Greek mythology. Known to be monstrous creatures who are often illustrated in literature as the luxurious temptress or the dangers of the sea, sirens will wait upon ocean rocks and lure wandering sailors to their deaths by singing a sweet, enchanting song. Sirens‘ creative and entertaining storytelling leans into this theme in the best ways with the haunting voice that echoes throughout episodes and its cliffside setting.

So, should you watch Sirens?

If you are still in recovery from White Lotus season three and looking for some new tropical chaos to embark on, Sirens is the perfect weekend getaway. It immerses you in a world of its own, full of deep conflict and shocking twists that had me at the edge of my seat from beginning to end. Sirens is one of those shows that’s easily digestible given its fast-paced five-episode structure, but you’ll also be tempted to watch it again just to see if you can pick up on those fun subtle cues you might have missed before. It’s still unknown if we will get a second season, but in the meantime, here’s to hoping they will hear my call for an encore.

By the time the weekend rolls around, are the only plans that sound appealing to you staying in and watching a show? Yeah, me too. I used to get excited to dress up and stay out late, but I won’t lie to you: Those days are over. Instead, streaming what’s new is now my idea of a wild Saturday night. I’m even marking release dates in my calendar.

Whenever I see a video on social media that pokes fun at the dad who pulled their kids on an inner tube without holding back, I promptly send it to my sister. We grew up going to the lake, and our dad (AKA the boat captain) always took us full throttle over the big, white capped waves, launching us off in the process. Years later, the thrill of doing “doughnuts” with the boat and holding onto the tube for dear life still hasn’t left. My parents now live on a lake, and my sister and I still love a good tubing session just as much as we did when we were kids.

Even if you don’t have fond memories of tubing as a kid, spending time at the lake is hard to beat. While you can easily seek out thrill-packed experiences, like wakeboarding or water skiing, you can also take things slowly and indulge in a dockside happy hour or a boat nap. Lake vacations are a stellar choice for those planning a group getaway, a laid-back escape, or even a family vacation. Plus, if you don’t live near the coast, heading to the lake can be the next best thing to spending time at the beach.

Ready to plan your own trip to the lake? Here, I’m highlighting a handful of lake vacations that deserve a spot on your summer itinerary. Pack your swimsuits and some sunscreen, and get ready to make some core memories.

1. Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

Luxury meets small-town Americana at Lake Geneva, making it one of the best lake vacations for those seeking a charm-filled getaway. It is just a two-hour drive from Chicago (or an hour from Milwaukee) and flaunts all the Midwestern beauty this area is known for. If you prefer lake views to lake swims, you’ll love the Geneva Lake Shore Path, a 26-mile walking path that circles the lake. From the path, you can scope out several Gilded Age mansions and historic estates while also taking in the clear water views.

For a fun activity on the water, sign up for the U.S. Mailboat Tour. You’ll get to ride along as the daring mail carriers leap on and off the moving boat to deliver mail to lakeside homes. If you want to take a dip, head to Riviera Beach, which is conveniently (and uniquely!) located in the heart of downtown. When you’re not on the water, spend your time exploring the nearby ice cream shops, art galleries, and wine bars.

2. Lake Sonoma, California

Looking for the ultimate summer boating escape? Lake Sonoma is calling. Set in the heart of wine country (which is arguably one of the best girls’ trip destinations), this coastal lake offers a great mix of adventure, relaxation, and scenery. With more than 50 miles of shoreline framed by rolling hills and nearby vineyards, this is one of those lake vacations that feels like a postcard.

No boat? No problem. At the heart of the action is the Lake Sonoma Marina, a full-service hub for all things boating. Visitors will find everything from boat ramps and slips to rentals for pontoons, jet skis, kayaks, and paddleboards—ideal for all experience levels. And when you’re done on the water, take your pick of wineries in the area to unwind with a glass or two.

3. Lake Keowee, South Carolina

While a dip in the lake always feels refreshing, there’s something particularly calming and peaceful about swimming in crystal clear waters. Because it’s fed by the Blue Ridge Mountains, Lake Keowee is known for its clean, sparkling emerald waters. The lake also features lots of coves that you can tuck a boat rental into before diving off the back or relaxing on the deck. Some of the coves even have small beaches that make perfect spots to lay out a towel and soak up the sun.

The water is generally calm (especially in the morning), so paddleboarding and kayaking are two other fun ways to spend your time. Plus, you can find lots of trails around the lake, especially in Keowee-Toxaway State Park. All offer stunning views of lush greenery with glimpses of the glittering water mixed in.

4. Lake Powell, Arizona

Hovering on the border of Arizona and Utah, Lake Powell is a long-standing go-to for desert views mixed with clear blue waters. For an unforgettable experience, skip the hotel and rent a houseboat for your stay. You’ll have a unique and up-close view of the stunning landscape and the luxury of a cozy bed and a fully equipped kitchen right on the water.

If you’re interested in camping, Lone Rock Beach is a fan favorite spot for sandy shores and dunes. Another perk to this destination is that you can enjoy the water well into the fall (this is also when it’s less crowded!). Thanks to Arizona’s warm temperatures, swimming and water sports are possible even outside of peak season.

5. Finger Lakes, New York

The Finger Lakes region of New York is where wine country meets lake life. This group of 11 lakes offers ample opportunity for every visitor to indulge in some R&R, whether the wine and craft beer scene is calling your name or you’re more keen on boating and hiking. The area also boasts an abundance of farms (and therefore amazing farm-to-table restaurants), trails with waterfall views, and quaint villages with small shops worth exploring.

Summer is the best time to go if you want to partake in water activities, but fall provides amazing foliage views. In any season, you’ll find gorgeous scenery, delicious food, and plenty of activities to fill your time.

6. Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri

Missouri’s most popular lake destination is notable for a variety of reasons, including that its shoreline is longer than the coast of California. While you can certainly partake in all the typical water sports, the area also boasts lots of activities off the water. Switch things up and head to Ha Ha Tonka State Park, where you can hike trails that take you through caves and sinkholes and ultimately lead you down to the water. You can also spend your time kayaking or picnicking if you prefer a more relaxing option.

For lodging, look into lakefront properties for rent if you’re traveling with a big group. Looking for a more casual setup? Campgrounds are aplenty!

7. Lake Norman, North Carolina

Whether you’re looking for high-speed thrills or laid-back lake vibes, Lake Norman is a go-to summer destination. Located just over 20 miles from Charlotte, North Carolina, it’s an ideal spot for toggling between time on the water during the day and a more lively city scene at night. Spanning over 31,000 acres, this freshwater lake provides plenty of space for your typical lake day activities. Perfect for swimming and water sports, the water is warm and inviting from early May to late October.

Off the water, enjoy the local brewery scene (King Canary Brewing Co. is a favorite) or grab some light bites at Hello, Sailor. Both spots are located on the water and offer a great viewpoint to catch the sunset. You can also head to downtown Davidson for a dose of small-town charm. Known as “Restaurant Row,” the area is lined with ample dining options, cute boutiques, and cozy wine bars.

8. Lake Travis, Texas

There’s a reason Lake Travis is such a popular spot for bachelorette parties and girls’ trips: location, location, location. Just west of Austin, Texas, this spot offers all the perks of lake life, plus a lively and upbeat scene. The vibe is energetic and social, while the views consist of rolling hills and gorgeous waterfront homes (the perfect mix if you ask me).

Devil’s Cove is known as the party spot, where you can pull up next to other boats for some fun in the sun. If this isn’t so much your scene, rest assured, there are ample coves that offer a more chill experience. Keep the fun going post-boat outing by going zip lining or enjoying some live music at a local bar. Also, don’t miss out on the sunset views at The Oasis on Lake Travis, where you can sip a margarita and grub on some Tex-Mex.

9. Lake Oconee, Georgia

Craving the niceties of Southern charm? Lake Oconee is perfect for the bougie girls’ trip or romantic couple’s getaway you’ve had on your bucket list. Given that the lake is just over an hour from Atlanta (depending on traffic), it makes for a practical spot to fly into for a short trip.

If you want to splurge on accommodations for a special occasion, the Ritz-Carlton has a location right on the lake that makes for a luxurious stay. But if you’re sticking to a tighter budget, there are plenty more lodging options to choose from. For a dose of water fun, consider renting jet skis or chartering a boat for a sunset cruise. Many rental homes also have swimming docks and shallow waters that you can dip into.

10. Detroit Lakes, Minnesota

If you’re looking for a place that provides plenty of options, the Detroit Lakes area of Minnesota is your best bet. With 400 lakes within a 25-mile radius, you’re practically guaranteed to find a spot that everyone in your group can enjoy. Whether you prefer calmer waters for fishing and kayaking or you want plenty of space to zip around in a boat, both types of lake vacations can be enjoyed here.

Be sure to stop by Detroit Lakes City Beach, which flaunts white sandy beaches that are perfect for posting up on. Spread out on the sand and relax with a book or play cornhole or some beach volleyball. You can also launch a boat from this beach, making it a good go-to for a well-rounded experience. This area does get quite crowded during the peak summer months, so if you want a less lively atmosphere, try to plan your trip later in the season.

11. Lake Texoma, Oklahoma and Texas

Roughly an hour and a half from Dallas, Lake Texoma—which straddles the border between Oklahoma and Texas—is a fun setting for a weekend away with family or friends. Spanning 89,000 acres, this lake has more than enough space for water sports like wakeboarding, skiing, and tubing.

Renting a pontoon boat is a popular way to enjoy the water, especially if you’re traveling with a group. You’ll have plenty of room to kick back while listening to a stellar playlist and enjoying a cold bev. Sailing is also a big draw to Lake Texoma, thanks to favorable winds. Charter a boat and enjoy the water stress-free! When you’re ready to refuel, The Point is known as one of the top dining spots on the lake, offering sweeping views of the water and tasty bites that are much needed after a busy day in the sun.

Turning the calendar to the summer months always feels like crossing a metaphorical finish line that warrants a celebration. After months of braving the cold (and, let’s be honest, a spring that felt like winter for many of us), the first taste of summer brings the same nostalgia and ease as a dinner with an old friend. Perhaps the most yearned-after gift of summer, though, is the transition from bundled layers to airy linen dresses, rattan details, and the vibrant colors of the season (that happen to perfectly compliment sun-kissed skin). Summer is about waking up, throwing on an easy outfit, and heading out the door feeling like a 10.

No matter what your schedule holds—though I hope it’s jam-packed with a lot of patio drinks and beach days—our summer 2025 capsule wardrobe can be mixed, matched, and worn on repeat until the first leaf of autumn falls.

What is a capsule wardrobe?

The simple definition is that it’s a curated wardrobe made up of versatile pieces that you love to wear. Your capsule wardrobe should be a testament to your personal style. One of the biggest misconceptions about capsule wardrobes is that they don’t apply to people with trendy or maximalist-leaning style. A good capsule doesn’t need to be a pattern-free collection of neutral basics; instead, think of it as a collection of pieces that can be styled many ways.

A capsule wardrobe consists of a set of tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear, shoes, and accessories that can be easily mixed and matched together to be dressed up, down, and anywhere in between.

How to build a capsule wardrobe

The first step to building a capsule wardrobe is taking a good, hard look at what you already own, then figuring out what needs to go—and what holes your closet has that need filling.

Sort each item into one of four piles:

Seasonal: If you’re able, move all of your seasonal pieces into a storage location so you have a better idea of the pieces you own that are actively in play.

I love it and would wear it tomorrow: These pieces fit your body and your lifestyle, and you’re confident wearing them. Put these back into your closet first.

Maybe: These pieces might not fit perfectly, or maybe just haven’t been worn in a while. (If you haven’t reached for a piece more than once, it belongs in this pile too). Put all of these items in a box and store them in a place that’s easily accessible. If you find yourself reaching for an item, put it back in your closet after; if you haven’t reached for it by the end of the season, keep it in the box to take to donate. This is noncommittal (for now) and allows you to change your mind later.

Hard no: Whether it’s because it doesn’t fit or you just decided you don’t like it, pack these pieces up to donate them.

For me, summer is synonymous with color. Once the first days of June hit, I don’t want to leave the threshold of my apartment without something bright worked into my outfit (or preferably a handful of them dispersed throughout whatever I’m wearing). For this summer’s capsule, I wanted to incorporate infusions of color made ultra-versatile with the help of breezy linens and a handful of neutrals. I chose accessories that are exclusive to summer—fish motifs, textured raffia, chunky pearls—to help bring the outfit options further into the season. This summer’s capsule can be styled for everything from office days to a Fourth of July barbecue to warm date nights spent sipping Sancerre on a patio.

Understanding your personal style

Understanding your personal style is the key to building a capsule wardrobe that really resonates with you. Start by taking a closer look at your current wardrobe. Which pieces do you reach for time and time again? Identify the pieces that you feel the most you in.

Consider your lifestyle and style preferences, too. Ask yourself questions like: What are my favorite colors to wear? Do I lean toward classic styles, or do I prefer trendier pieces? Do I tend to reach for bottoms that prioritize comfort? Start to find the patterns in your preferences before you add anything new to your closet.

Creating a color palette

You want your capsule wardrobe to be filled with pieces you actually want to wear, which means they should fall into a color palette you want to reach for on repeat. Start by thinking about your most-worn pieces: Are they bright and statement-making, or neutral and classic? Having a few neutrals in your capsule wardrobe for versatility’s sake isn’t a bad idea, but your capsule definitely doesn’t need to be—and honestly, shouldn’t be—only neutrals. Prioritize selecting pieces in colors you know you’ll reach for—even better, in colors that spark joy for you—and in shades that will pair well with other pieces in your closet.

The essentials of a summer capsule wardrobe

Summer dressing is all about ease. As opposed to the seasons that require layering, summer dressing centers around pieces you can throw on and leave the house in. Dresses that can be worn from the office to happy hour, linen button-ups that double as beach cover-ups—summer pieces bring an element of versatility to dressing that’s exclusive to the season. The essentials of a summer capsule wardrobe include:

Essential tops

 • A white tank top: A white tank can be worn alone or layered under your cardigans and button-ups on chilly nights.
 • A statement top: A top in a trending color or out-of-the-box pattern can be paired with your summer bottoms for day-to-night wear.
 • A linen button-up: You can opt for a classic white button-up, or one in a bright color or loud pattern that will make a statement throughout the warm months.

Essential bottoms

 • Denim shorts: Long-length denim shorts can be dressed up or down for whatever your summer calendar might bring.
 • Linen shorts: Linen shorts might make you feel like you got away with leaving the house in pajamas, but they’re a workhorse that can be worn on casual days and dressed-up nights alike.
 • A maxi skirt: Swapping out pants for a breezy maxi skirt can bring much-needed adaptability to your summer tops.

Essential accessories

 • Seasonal jewelry: Shells, fish, baroque pearls—summer brings endless seasonal jewelry options that infuse a taste of the season to whatever they’re paired with.
 • A raffia bag: Swapping your go-to leather bag for a raffia version will help ensure you’re schlepping your belongings in style all season long.
 • Versatile sandals: Your summer wardrobe isn’t complete without sandals that are versatile enough to leave at your door and slip into whenever you leave the house. Summer 2025 calls for minimal flip-flops, strappy styles, and easy slides.

How to style your summer capsule wardrobe

For a holiday weekend barbecue

Fish Necklace (Budget Option) | Ruched Tank (Plus) | Raffia Tote (Budget Option) | White Jeans (Plus) | Oval Sunglasses (Budget Option) | Flip Flops (Budget Option)

A red tank can be a wear-on-repeat piece throughout the entirety of the summer months, but will come especially handy for holiday weekends. For a Fourth of July or Labor Day celebration, white jeans and flip flops will help the red tank feel festive without being too on the nose. The look will be simultaneously sweat-proof and ready for the inevitable temperature dip that’ll happen once the sun goes down.

For a night out with friends

Pearl Choker (Budget Option) | Linen Pants (Plus) | Oval Sunglasses (Budget Option) | Striped Tank (Plus) | Rope Bag (Budget Option) | Heeled Sandals (Budget Option)

One of the greatest joys in life is sitting outside on a warm summer night drinking a cocktail—or better yet, an ice-cold glass of wine—with your friends. Look effortlessly chic while doing it by pairing a striped tank with linen shorts and a pair of heeled flip flops. The combo gives “I’m not trying too hard” in a summery way, but remains completely chic in the instance you take the night to a second location.

For a casual dinner

Pearl Choker (Budget Option) | Oval Sunglasses (Budget Option) | Raffia Tote (Budget Option) | Tie-Front Blouse (Plus) | Denim Shorts (Plus) | Flip Flops (Budget Option)

Be it a cookout on a friend’s deck or a last-minute reservation at a local spot, it feels like the summer months inevitably come with more dinner reservations than the rest of the year combined. This butter-yellow linen top can come to the rescue every time you need an outfit at the eleventh hour. For a casual lunch or dinner, pair it with relaxed denim shorts, flip flops, and layered-on seasonal accessories.

For a casual Friday

Oval Sunglasses (Budget Option) | Linen Button-Up (Plus) | Pearl Choker (Budget Option) | Shell Earrings (Budget Option) | Drawstring Jeans (Plus) | Ballet Flats (Budget Option)

Whether you’re headed to the office or to work from a coffee shop, a linen button-up and raffia sandals are your perfect summer workday companions. Seasonal accessories—hello, pearl necklace and shell earrings—help to take the look into summer territory without losing its professionalism. If your office doesn’t allow jeans, you can swap them for a breezy pair of linen trousers or your favorite maxi skirt.

To the Farmer’s Market

Fish Necklace (Budget Option) | Oval Sunglasses (Budget Option) | Striped Tee (Plus) | Rope Bag (Budget Option) | Drawstring Jeans (Plus) | Flip Flops (Budget Option)

I don’t make the rules: Summer Saturdays are for Farmer’s Markets. Head to romanticize your life in a striped tee and jeans that are inherently casual, but still cute enough to wear around town when you inevitably stay out for the rest of the afternoon. Accessorize with a cheeky rope necklace and a bouquet of Farmer’s Market flowers.

On a date

Oval Sunglasses (Budget Option) | Mini Dress (Plus) | Shell Earrings (Budget Option) | Rope Bag (Budget Option) | Heeled Sandals (Budget Option)

The best part of summer dressing will always be dresses; they’re the easy, one-and-done outfit option that many of us have to suffer without for the rest of the year. Head to your dinner reservation in a white mini dress with heeled flip flops, a woven bag, and shell earrings (which will make the perfect statement should you have to throw your hair up in the heat).
